Money saving is what we are all about these days. One way to do
that is with a high efficiency heat pump.
Let us start at the beginning. What is a heat pump? A heat pump
is an electrically driven piece of equipment that moves heat from one
location to another, much like it sounds. Basically he heat pump
takes air from one location (heat source) and moves it to another
location (heat sink). For example, heat pump technology is used in
air conditioning, freezers and refrigerators to take heat from one
temperature to another.
In heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) a heat pump
refers to a vapor compression refrigeration device that includes a
reversing valve and optimized heat exchangers reversing the direction
of the heat flow. These typically draw the heat from the air or from
the ground and therefore do not always work well in temperatures below
23 degrees.
A split system heat pump pulls the heat out of a home to keep it
cool in the warmer months and pulls air into the home in the cooler
months to keep the home warm. The air outside has heat in it always.
A heat pump has a fan, compressor, outdoor coil, indoor coil and some
type of refrigerant much like an air conditioner. The efficiency
level of a heat pump for heating is HSPF and for cooling is SEER.
In the money saving department there are many tax advantages to
switching to something such as a high efficiency heat pump system.
The federal government, in an effort to encourage homeowners to change
over to these more efficient greener style of heating and cooling,
have offered as much as $1,500 in tax credits. Take some time to talk
with your local heating and cooling professional for about obtaining a
list of tax credits and qualifications in this regard.
Switching to a heat pump system could be well worth your efforts
both in the way of comfort and in money savings. Take a look at the
options and make an informed decision taking into account all of your
potential rebates and credits. It would seem that being more
efficient as a homeowner has many more than just one good reason to
take the plunge.
